| The bronchi are the air passages through which the air from the atmosphere enters the body and reaches the alveoli in the lungs. The alveoli help in the gaseous
exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen. Acute Bronchitis is a medical condition where in an inflammation of the large bronchus occurs. This inflammation causes the air
passage to be blocked and consequently, there is difficulty in breathing. The cause for such a health problem is basically infection by bacteria or viruses. Chemicals
have also been known to be responsible for the state.
Basically, there are two types of bronchitis. One is a sudden onset of respiratory problems while the other is a long-standing, more permanent type of respiratory
ailment called the chronic bronchitis. The former is the Acute Bronchitis, which has similar symptoms in adults and children but its presence may affect individuals
differently. Expect for some ailments which may be present for more than a month, this type of bronchial infection heals in about 2 to 3 weeks.
In a child, the symptoms are generally difficulty in breathing caused due to the swelling of the wind passage. The child may face additional problems such as repeated coughing, fever and body aches. The causes for the condition in children can vary from premature birth to secondary inhalation of cigarette smoke. Children in who are subjected to inhalation of smoke induced with tobacco and other unhealthy materials are more prone to acute bronchitis. A child with other medical problems like heart ailments, tonsils (which are often swollen), and environmental allergies are more likely to be affected with symptoms. More over, air pollution is responsible for the disease in many cases as young children are unable to tackle the ill-effects.
In adults, generally influenza, cold, flu and infections of the upper respiratory tract result in acute bronchitis. The main symptom again is cough accompanied with
higher body temperature. Diagnoses of pneumonia during the same span are commonly noted. Difficulty in breathing, as in the case of asthmatic attacks, is a general
symptom. Besides that, when the individual moves or performs any physical activity, a wheezing sound from the chest region is heard.
The physician treating the patient will prescribe antibacterial, antiviral, and antibiotic medications as a part of the treatment. Other medical products as per the
patient’s condition and practicing physician’s discretion may be administered. Although a permanent cure is not known, it is always advisable to follow a healthy diet and lifestyle.
