Acoustic neuroma – The ear-brain connect tumor |
| Acoustic neuroma, as the name suggests, is related to acoustics - sound and neuroma – nerves. It is a slow growing tumor of the nerve that connects the ear and the brain. It is a benign, non-cancerous tumor which does not spread in the body but it may damage several important nerves as it grows.
Acoustic neuroma is believed to occur with genetic defect whose cause is not known and is relatively uncommon. The symptoms differ according to the size and location of the tumor and the symptoms usually show after the age of 30 as the tumor grows slowly. Some common symptoms are ringing in the affected ear, called tinnitus, abnormal sensation of movement called vertigo, loss of hearing in the affected ear, dizziness, headache, trouble understanding speech, sleepiness, numbness in one ear, weakness and pain in face or one ear, loss of balance, vision problems etc.
The diagnosis of acoustic neuroma is based on the test and examination of the nervous system and the medical history. There may be some signs of unsteady walk,drooling, dilated pupil or facial drooping on one side. The most beneficial test is the MRI scan of the head and other useful tests are hearing test – audiology,vertigo test – caloric stimulation, head CT, test of brainstem function and hearing – brainstem auditory evoked response and test of equilibrium and balance
electronystagmography.
Acoustic neuroma treatment varies according to the size and location of the tumor and a decision has to be taken about whether it should be observed or removed. If the tumor is small and no symptoms are seen, it may be followed. If it is not treated, nerves involved in hearing and for the movement and feeling of face may be damaged and large tumors can have buildups of fluid in the brain which may pose as a life threat. Generally, large tumors growing quickly, causing symptoms or likely to cause problems are removed surgically.
Apart from surgery, stereotactic radiosurgery is a form of radiation therapy which focuses high-powered x-rays on a small area to slower the growth of tumors that are
hard to remove with surgery and to treat elderly and sick patients not fit for surgery. Removal of the tumor may sometimes pose the risk of nerve damage or loss of
hearing or weakening of facial muscles, especially when the tumor is around the nerves.
